Vintage Design

Constructed of Wutong "phoenix wood" in Shanxi Province circa 1890, this vintage trunk boasts a black lacquer surface illuminated by ornate floral paintings and characters from Chinese literature. Traditionally made for use by touring Chinese opera troupes, these trunks were often decoratively adorned with visuals from the operas they performed or with symbolically rendered flowers. The central section of this trunk appears to feature a painting of peonies, a symbol of prosperity and affluence. The figures to the left and right depict a woman and a man in luxurious garments, the woman holding a hand fan and a candle.

The trunk boasts an old, studded metal clasp on the front, enabling a lock if desired. Its hinged lid opens to a generous interior, allowing for storage of items ranging from clothing and bedding to toys. Its small proportions make it an excellent choice for use next to a bed or sofa as a unique side table.
