What lies beneath. . . Dutch designer Nienke Hoogvliet is known for her sustainable, experimental projects. And her delicate Waterschatten collection set is no exception.
Taking advantage of Dutch Water Authorities’ recent, innovative efforts to recover valuable energy and raw materials from wastewater, Hoogvliet has transformed cleaned, recycled bathroom tissue—a material we think of, unsurprisingly, as “dirty,”—into something beautiful.
Every year, 180,000 tons of toilet paper is flushed in the Netherlands alone—that’s equivalent to 180,000 trees. With the sustainable Waterschatten series—which, in addition to the decorative bowls, also includes lighting and a table—Hoogvliet has given the recycled pulp material new life and value.
The bowls are available in three sizes–S (5x11cm), M (7x14cm), and L(10x20cm)–and three types of decoration (pure, blue sprinkles with brass flakes, and dark blue with brass flakes). Each set contains one bowl in each size, and the customer can choose their preferred type of decoration. Please note, as these objects are composed of upcycled paper, they are neither waterproof nor food safe and may only be used for decoration.
