This bronze with medal patina entitled “The Defense of the Flag” signed Charles Anfrie (1833-1905), represents a soldier in action, standing on a rock base. The soldier, dressed in a military uniform and wearing a cap, holds a pistol in his right hand, which he points forward. In his left hand he brandishes a flag, which seems to float behind him, adding dynamics to the scene. The base of the sculpture bears the inscription “La DEFENSE du DRAPEAU” and the artist’s signature on the terrace. The meticulous details of this work highlight courage and patriotism, themes dear to this era. Historical testimony and praise of the courage of the French soldiers during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, this sculpture will delight you with its charisma.
