A dozen designs to warm up the fall season

Autumn Auburns

Friday evenings, people get together / Hiding from the weather, tea and toasted / Buttered currant buns, can't compensate / For lack of sun because the summer's all gone / La la la la, oh my poor rheumatic back / Yes, yes, yes, it's my autumn almanac —The Kinks

Autumn has arrived, which means the days are getting shorter and the temperatures are starting to drop. But don't despair. Subtle changes to your interior can help you delight in the changing seasons and celebrate the great indoors.

And of course we're not about to send you into a kitschy, falling-leaves-themed trap. Instead, we're rounding up some utterly elegant, collection-worthy designs in warm shades of russet, chestnut, copper, and rust. Perfect autumnal touches for your home, replete with grace, comfort, and hygge galore.

Naïve Low Chair by etc.etc. for Lithuanian brand Emko

What could be more autumnally cozy than auburn-hued velour? A couple of Naïve Low Chairs by etc.etc. for Lithuanian brand Emko in terracotta upholstery creates the perfect setting for lazy chit-chats and heart-warming afternoon teas. They delightfully blend the simple hominess of midcentury Scandinavian design with the sumptuous proportions and curves that made the Art Deco era so drool-worthy.

Touché E Tray by Martina Bartoli for Mason Editions

Another terracotta beauty? The polished, pared-back, and playful Touché E Tray by Martina Bartoli for Milan-based brand Mason Editions . The tray's thin, gold-chromed rod undulates around the base and functions as both an ornament and a handle. The marriage of the warm palette with the minimilist form will ensure your fresh-baked batch of cookies will look as chic as can be.

Fringe Ceiling Lamp by Hans-Agne Jakobsson

The 1960s-era lighting designs of Swedish decorator Hans-Agne Jakobsson are certainly having a moment now, as evidenced by the sheer number of high-end, high-style interiors we see these days coming from high-profile tastemakers. The fringed examples of Jakobsson's work, in particular, are super hot. Kick this on-the-pulse design up another notch by opting for one in henna orange.

Slab No. 011 Wall Object by Vaust

The Slab No. 011 Wall Object by experimental, Berlin-based studio Vaust is pure minimal luxe. It brings a sophisticated texture to your walls, while celebrating that earthy palette that's so apropos this time of year.

Pita Cushions by Alejandra Carmona and Caterina Moretti for PECA

The leather Pita Cushion by Alejandra Carmona and Caterina Moretti for Mexican brand Peca is refined in form and material, lightly embellished with traditional hand embroidery and a rich tawny color. Neutral and architectural, this accent piece will add a touch of upscale warmth to just about any style interior.

Anonymous Hammered Copper Candleholder

You might have heard of Julia Scott’s now world-famous "candle hour." The idea is simple: turn off your devices and settle in for an interlude of candlelit meditation, reading, or togetherness. Autumn is perfect for this kind of soul-filling evening ritual. And what better way to do it than with a piece like this intricate, anonymously-made vintage candleholder in hammered copper. In fact, it's as beautiful during daylight hours as it is captivating in twilight, lit with flickering flames.

Hanging Candleholder by Timo Sarpaneva

Or—to take your "candle hour" to the next level—consider this spectacular, chandelier-like, 1960s hanging candleholder by Finnish design master Timo Sarpaneva. We can’t imagine how your cold, fall evenings could be more glamorous than under the glow of this rare vintage find.

Monk Chairs by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Molteni

The vintage market has recently rediscovered the super chic, 1970s-era work of Italian architect-designers, husband and wife, Afra and Tobia Scarpa. And the duo's bold-yet-elegant Monk Chairs, produced by Italian furniture brand Molteni , are in high demand these days. They are especially on point in this reddish-brown, mahogany-hued leather.

Vintage Red Lithograph by Bernd Berner

Vintage lithographs from the 1950s, '60s, and '70s are a fairly affordable way to bring unique and eye-catching art into your home. They tend toward the colorful and abstract; calmly unobtrusive while still livening up their enviroment. Renowned German artist Bernd Berner is known for saying, "We are more and more covered by optical and acoustic annoyances." His response was to create art that encourages us to, in the words of Depeche Mode, "enjoy the silence."

Motley R Tablecloth by CTRLZAK Studio

We're particularly fond of designs that nod to tradition while bringing an unexpected twist. Italian design studio CTRLZAK's Motley Tablecloth does just that by offering a classic Chinese motif on one side that's complemented by a traditional European motif on the other. The two lively patterns meet in the middle, with a look that's both posh and punk rock thanks to the meticulous hand printing process of Tuscan textile artisans.

Vintage Cognac Leather Two-Seater Sofa

Cognac-leather seating is the thing this year, and it looks especially handsome on a postwar Danish modern sofa like this one. No frills but plenty of restorative comfort and timeless good taste. This piece will be with you for the long haul, becoming a reliable go-to spot to prop up your feet and let the complexities of the day melt away.

Blue Hour Throw by Merel Karhof and Yasmijn Karhof for Textile Museum Tilburg

Dutch artist-designers Merel Karhof and Yasmijn Karhof collaborated with the renowned Textile Museum Tilburg in 2016 to produce the exceptional, collectible Blue Hour Throw. Both architectural and conceptual, the glowing colors in the piece reflect those liminal dawn and dusk hours when the skies shift and our circadian rhythms begin to move between waking and sleeping. A wonderful accompaniment for when you feel like hibernating at home.
