Ottoman Libyan Nabila Bracelets in Fire-Gilded Silver Tripoli, 1890s

Extraordinary original Libyan Nabila bracelet in fire-gilded silver, made in Tripoli during the late Ottoman period (circa 1880–1910).

Nabila bracelets represent one of the most iconic and recognizable forms of traditional Libyan jewellery.

They were traditionally worn in pairs and formed an essential part of the female bridal trousseau, particularly in the tradition of Ghadamès. (2 are available)

The bracelet displays refined openwork and chased decoration executed entirely by hand. The design is dominated by the characteristic radiant sunburst motif, traditionally associated with protection, prosperity, and good fortune for the bride.

In Libyan jewellery, openwork was especially prized because it allowed the wearer's skin or brightly coloured textiles worn beneath the jewellery to create a striking visual contrast with the surface.

The bracelet still retains its original fire-gilding, a feature that is now extremely rare to find on surviving examples from this period. In late Ottoman Libya, gilding was generally reserved for jewellery intended for wealthier urban families, distinguishing such pieces from the plain silver ornaments more commonly found in rural and tribal communities.

The bracelet bears multiple examples of the Tripoli administrative control mark (Sah mark), identifiable by the characteristic square punch of the pre-colonial period featuring a crowned emblem and ship. Additional workshop and silversmith's marks are also present, applied before submission to the assay office. The silver is of approximately 900 fineness.

Alongside the hallmarks are the characteristic serrated assay marks (Tremolierstich), created by removing a small sample of metal for testing and verification.

The combined presence of the silversmith's marks, assay cuts, and official control hallmarks constitutes a rare testimony to the precious metal control system in use in Ottoman Tripoli before 1911.
