Eames DSW Chairs & the Molded Plastic Family

American couple Charles and Ray Eames hold the title for most renowned designers of the 20th century, and their beyond classic DSW Chairs, designed more than a half-century ago, remain their most popular design. The DSW belong to a family of dining chairs and armchairs that represent one of the earliest successes in mass-produced, modernist design.

The Eameses' family of molded plastic and fiberglass chairs begin with the DAR, which is an acronym for Dining Armchair Rod. A pioneering design that makes full use of industrial materials and processes, the prototype for the DAR was debuted at a Charles Eames-curated exhibition at New York's Museum of Art in 1946—to wide acclaim. It featured a molded, reinforced polyester-plastic seat mount atop a metal-rod base. By 1948, the design was put into production with a molded fiberglass seat by American furniture manufacturer Herman Miller, and soon the design was available with and without arms and with a variety of base configurations, including the Eiffel Tower base, a rocking chair base, and the wood rod legs of the DSW. All of these options—including DSX, DAX, DSR, DAR, DSW, DAW, DAL, DAW, and RAR.
