Wonderful oil on canvas where the sacred family is represented in the Nazareth workshop. It belongs to the colonial school, has been carried out in the 18th century, following the style of Zurbarán, a key artist in the Spanish Golden Age, as well as in the colonial school, where their types and works were followed.
The composition of the scene is balanced since the characters are arranged pyramidally. San José Pule Maderas worked her work bank while the Virgin, with a lost look, sew. His position and his face seem to refer to the evangelical appointment: "He kept all memories in his heart." For his part, the young Jesus is on the left, he looks at the finger he bleeds after having taken the crown of thorns. The figures lack Nimbo, the only thing that alludes to their holiness is the breakage of glory of the upper left corner. The canvas, of great iconographic interest, presents a direct and intimate image of a family that intuits its destiny. This redemption is reflected through different elements or symbols such as crown or blood (passion); or the white cloths, the pigeons and the vase of lilies and roses (purity).
The work is simple, flees from the baroque's devices, because the scene takes place in an inner sparing. Thanks to the use of drawing, the figures are clearly represented. The colors and its volumes express exquisite matric quality, also thanks to the treatment of light. The faces of the characters are almond, of concentrated features ... in an atmosphere of deep silence. All these characteristics are typical of Zurbarán (1598-1644), appreciable in his work the house of Nazareth, theme of which there are at least twelve versions related to the painter Zurbarán and/or his workshop.
Zurbarán in colonial art
During the Spanish colonial domination, in the colonies, a mainly religious painting was developed, aimed at Christianizing indigenous peoples. Local painters had the Spanish works as a model, who followed literally in terms of aesthetics, types and iconography. Over time, in the first years of the nineteenth century, already in times of the independence and political openness of some of the colonies, artists began to represent a new painting model with their own identity.
Therefore, this Holy Family work in the Nazareth workshop must be understood in this context, understanding the importance of great teachers of the Spanish Golden Age (Zurbarán, Murillo, Velázquez and Ribera) in colonial artistic development.
